The Coalition
conducts open record and open meeting workshops to
address Freedom of Information issues
throughout Maine.
The Coalition
provides speakers to educational and civic groups, professional
associations, and other available forums as part of an ongoing
campaign to enhance knowledge and
understanding of open meetings and records laws.
We also receive
requests for assistance from interested citizen groups, public
officials, and members of the
press. In cases where public access to government is being denied
without cause, the Coalition intends to work -- through letters,
telephone calls, and donated legal services -- to open records and
to discourage closed meetings.
MFOIC is a true
coalition, embodying as its formal "members" a number of
organizations, and individuals, with a common interest in First
Amendment issues - see our
Members page.
The support of
law firms, the broadcast and print media,
press organizations, and the
public helped the Coalition get
started. We now are looking to expand our presence in the state,
and to make the concept of open government in Maine a reality.
